Through The Perilous Fight

At the writing of this column, America is preparing to commemorate the 226th anniversary of its founding. Sadly, this year's jubilation is being dampened by ominous rumblings which not only threaten to overshadow any such future celebrations, but also threaten the very existence of the country. This admonition should not be construed as an extension of those frequent, but absolutely necessary, terrorist alerts being issued by the Justice Department pertaining to the possibility of another attack from Middle-Eastern fanatics. Rather, this is a warning of something which, though less flamboyant, is far more insidious and dangerous to the nation than any act al Qaeda could possibly commit.

Admittedly, bin Laden's minions were successful at inflicting death, destruction, grief and pain on the Pentagon; that venerated old building that in prior years had been the place where the vile tides of Hitler's Reich and Tojo's Empire had been turned back and ultimately defeated. But the murderous zeal of hijackers could not destroy the military potential that structure represents. Within days its uninjured occupants had regrouped, rallied, and proceeded to effectively wage war against the host nation of the attackers, who have since been driven into full retreat.

Recently, a meeting was held in New York City for the purpose of soliciting input as to a fitting replacement for the twin towers. The meeting yielded some amazing results. The outcry from the public was fierce and unified, defying all professional advice. For the sake of safety, it was recommended that any future buildings ought to be smaller and less significant in order to make them less of a target. Still, the overwhelming consensus of the hundreds of New Yorkers who showed up at the meeting was that any new structures ought to be of at least the same (if not greater) magnificence than those which had been destroyed. So fervent is the passion of those who hold this view that work crews have even offered to assist in the reconstruction at no charge. Thus, New Yorkers are proving that though the al Qaeda murderers were able to demolish America's most esteemed skyscrapers, in no way had they dimmed the spirit which originally inspired their creation.

Americans remember, in the midst of the horror, the three firemen who raised their nation's flag over the wreckage of ground zero in a scene which was, in so many ways, reminiscent of those brave soldiers on Iwo Jima. Even the very flag which had been flying over the towers on the morning of the attack and came down with their collapse, though tattered, is still flying ... is still called “Old Glory,” and is still inspiring to the country's citizens. It lifts the hearts of the people; for though it is battered, it still symbolizes “One Nation Under God.”

Certainly, no efforts of al Qaeda could jeopardize the very future of the country or demean its most prominent symbol ... the flag. But when activist courts, such as the ultra-liberal Ninth Circuit in San Francisco, are allowed to rule the phrase “Under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance to be “unconstitutional,” something much more sinister is at work within the national borders than any foreign terrorist plot. When a radical entity can accrue to itself the legal power to arbitrarily purge, from the public domain, references to Almighty God whose blessings have made the country great, and systematically seek to replace them with any popular notion of the day, then the nation is truly in danger of losing not only its prosperity and well-being, but also its soul. No mere band of foreign thugs, regardless of how malignant their aspirations, could ever inflict such harm as this.

The advent of liberty and justice was, in a real sense, inevitable in this country's establishment for those things were conceived in the hearts of its God-fearing people and given life through the sacrifices and wisdom of its noble founders. Though the War for Independence might have dragged on longer than it did, no amount of British resolve could have permanently suppressed the inevitability of an America founded on the principles of the Bible.

Church dominated governments have come and gone over the centuries. Many major world religions have been incorporated into national governments, usually yielding tragic results, and frequently bearing little contrast to those countries which have sought to divest themselves of any religious influence. America was different in that it sought to institute its governing structure on the tenets of Christianity. Though far from perfect, America has certainly reaped the blessed fruit of such a founding.

History is absolutely clear about one thing. If the significance of the Author of those tenets is successfully sponged from the national conscience in the name of “political correctness,” “religious neutrality,” or any other morally bankrupt ideology, degeneration of the national character will soon follow. Chaos, misery, and despair will supplant the glory of liberty and justice for all. In the end, the nation will lose its greatness and fall into ruin. And no amount of military might is sufficient to restore it.

Growing up during the turbulent decades of the ‘60's and ‘70's, Christopher  Adamo saw, to his dismay, the nation's moral foundations being destroyed  before his very eyes. But even then he was a staunch Conservative at heart,  and rejected outright the tenets of America's counterculture revolution.

 After a hitch in the Air Force, where he specialized in airborne  electro- optical systems, he pursued a career in the field of aerospace,  working for major defense contractors in California, Florida, and Colorado. But his career plans abruptly changed during the industry-wide downsizing that followed the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster.

Presently he is working in the field of industrial instrumentation in the state of Wyoming. Concurrently, he has become involved in that state's political process, attending state GOP conventions as a delegate, and serving as a member of the Wyoming Republican Central Committee. He has also aided in the candidacies of local legislators and state senators, as well as a U.S. Senator and Congresswoman.

From 1993 to 1996, he edited and wrote for “The Wyoming Christian”, the state newsletter for Christian Coalition of Wyoming. During that period, he developed an acute awareness of the harm being done to Conservatism by liberal activists within the Republican Party as well as the Democrats. This remains a favorite theme of his articles, which now appear as a regular feature on GOPUSA.
