The Blind Leading The Stupid
by Christopher G. Adamo
Scores of "civil rights" organizations (read: liberal socialists masquerading under the cloak of minority special interests) are stumping for a meeting with incoming Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist. If consistent with past Republican bumbling, Frist will attempt to ingratiate himself to these organizations, thus allowing his future worthiness to be assessed by them in terms of how much of their liberal socialist agenda he embraces and advances.
Less than two months ago, in an almost unprecedented mid-term election upset, Republicans reacquired majority status in the Senate, while strengthening their numbers in the House of Representatives. How is it then that America once again finds its future in the hands of totally discredited leftists whose philosophies it soundly rejected in November?
Some will contend that the present, deplorable situation resulted from a few inane comments spoken by Trent Lott at Strom Thurmond's hundredth birthday. But such is simply not the case. Rather, it was the reaction to criticism in the wake of the comments, by not only Lott himself but also virtually every major Republican player including the President, which has successfully hamstrung the Republican agenda.
Consider, in contrast, the response of Democrats to comments that vastly outweigh anything Lott either said, or could have intended to say. On December 20, Senator Patty Murray (D. Washington) praised terrorist leader Osama Bin Laden to an assembly of Seattle high school students. Murray explained how, in her opinion, Bin Laden had earned the loyalty and appreciation of fundamentalist Muslims throughout the world by building roads and schools. In contrast, Murray suggested that America's lack of public works projects in Muslim nations had rightly merited their venom and hatred.
If Trent Lott is to be condemned for advocating a return to the days when certain people, by virtue of their skin color, were consigned to the back of the bus, what can be said of Murray, who lauds the despicable individuals that, among other acts of brutality, actively promote blowing up entire buses full of innocent people? And if Lott's words are an affront to those Americans who suffered the humiliation of segregation four decades ago, Murray's are an absolute abomination to the memory of every American slaughtered on September 11, 2001, as well as those who were terrorized on that day or ever since. Yet no fellow Democrats have called for Murray's removal from office, or even an official censure. Furthermore, Murray has responded with only accusations against her critics and a "justification" of her statements, but absolutely no apology.
Admittedly, those Americans and other innocent people victimized by Bin Laden and his kind do not constitute an exalted minority group according to spokesmen on the left. Thus the liberal press, being neither sympathetic to Western civilization nor critical of like-minded Democrats, helped minimize public outcry over Murray's comments by engaging in a complete media blackout of the incident.
However, the experience of recent years has proven, time and again, that it doesn't take much of a media attack against any conservative gaffe, no matter how inconsequential, to immediately generate defensive responses, usually culminating in needless apologies and capitulations from the Republicans. In contrast, Democrats easily weather such storms by simply treating them with arrogant indifference, no matter how despicable and indefensible their words or actions are.
Were Democrats justified in making the kind of statements offered by Murray, they could be credited with courage and steadfastness for retaining a posture of moral superiority in the face of public outrage. In reality, their responses merely highlight the contempt and disdain which they harbor for their fellow citizens. But in light of the self-effacement and pandering exhibited by their opponents, Democrats can nevertheless continue to claim the moral "high ground."
The pitiful Republican "team" has shown itself, in this time of testing, to be comprised of a Mississippi Senator who allows his political enemies to define him, a party that agrees in principle with that definition, and a President who seeks to deflect the attacks from himself by projecting the race-baiting rhetoric of the left on to all of America. Mere majority numbers in Congress, or even Republican control of the executive branch, cannot stand alone as a substitute for courage and principle. Disaster will always result from allowing liberal Democrats to set the terms of the debate, since they will shamelessly do so with no consideration for balance or objectivity. And within such a framework, they will be continually assured to win.

Growing up during the turbulent decades of the ‘60's and ‘70's, Christopher Adamo saw, to his dismay, the nation's moral foundations being destroyed before his very eyes. But even then he was a staunch Conservative at heart, and rejected outright the tenets of America's counterculture revolution.
After a hitch in the Air Force, where he specialized in airborne electro- optical systems, he pursued a career in the field of aerospace, working for major defense contractors in California, Florida, and Colorado. But his career plans abruptly changed during the industry-wide downsizing that followed the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster.
Presently he is working in the field of industrial instrumentation in the state of Wyoming. Concurrently, he has become involved in that state's political process, attending state GOP conventions as a delegate, and serving as a member of the Wyoming Republican Central Committee. He has also aided in the candidacies of local legislators and state senators, as well as a U.S. Senator and Congresswoman.
From 1993 to 1996, he edited and wrote for “The Wyoming Christian”, the state newsletter for Christian Coalition of Wyoming. During that period, he developed an acute awareness of the harm being done to Conservatism by liberal activists within the Republican Party as well as the Democrats. This remains a favorite theme of his articles, which now appear as a regular feature on GOPUSA. |
