"The preservation of the sacred fire of liberty and the destiny of the republican model of government are justly considered... deeply, ...finally, staked on the experiment entrusted to the hands of the American people." - George Washington, First Inaugural Address

Rethinking Liberal Utopia

by Christopher G. Adamo

So California Governor Gray Davis is on the ropes, as the recall movement against him is growing by the day. At present, 25,000 new signatures are being added daily to the petition demanding his ouster. Davis, in a grossly misguided PR move, is publicly exhibiting an air of complete indifference to the movement. No doubt intended to portray extreme confidence, it comes across as more of a "Let them eat cake!" attitude... historically not the best message for people in his position who hope to ingratiate themselves to the general public.

Admittedly (though certainly not in Davis' defense), the beleaguered governor is not entirely to blame for the ugly sentiment among the citizenry. Far too many Californians have voted for years in favor of excessive "government funded" services, never considering for a second that the necessary funding must be forcibly confiscated from their fellow citizens. Now the "chickens" of socialism have come home to roost, and neither those facing cuts in the government handouts they have come to expect, nor the productive citizens who consistently have footed the bill (and from whom an even heavier burden of support will now be demanded) are feeling very good about the present situation or the manner in which it might be confronted.

For his own part, Gray Davis has helped create this monster, which may come crashing down on him, by steadfastly refusing to engage in the sort of responsible leadership that was so sorely needed. Promise everything to everyone, at no cost to anyone, and you can get elected governor of a state in which the mindset of utopian social activists and Hollywood leftists is so prevalent. However, at some point people will begin to expect such "pie in the sky" promises to be borne out in their day-to-day lives. That's when every unprincipled social "messiah" gets into trouble.

Despite his outward show of self-assurance, sources close to Davis say that he is absolutely preoccupied with the recall movement, as well he should be, along with every other meddling liberal in the country who occupies any position of authority. For although the storm may eventually blow over in California, and Davis may survive this particular onslaught, the fact that it has thus far gained such traction among the “grassroots” signals a fundamental change in how average citizens perceive babbling politicians who exploit their emotions and lavish empty promises during campaign time, solely for their own personal advancement.

Elsewhere among the crown jewels of liberalism, something more literal has “come home to roost.” Boulder, Colorado is the scene of a mobile home park that is besieged by a massive invasion of starlings, making life generally unpleasant and very unhealthy for the human inhabitants. Well, birds will do that sort of thing. However, as explained by the National Center for Public Policy Research, the real problem is with the Boulder City Council.

Showing extreme deference for the “rights” and feelings of the birds, but only offering symbolic concern for afflicted people, the city council refuses to allow them to take any action that might harm the birds. While it is tempting to respond with laughter, being that this is Boulder, Colorado, the grim reality that citizens' rights are being subordinated to some imagined “rights” endowed to birds suggests a blinding ideology among the city council members, causing them to abdicate their civic responsibilities.

It was with a shipment of tea dumped into Boston Harbor that the revolutionary spirit of colonial America was made evident to King George back in 1773. With thousands of starlings on the rampage in Boulder, one has to wonder what substance might be available in sufficient quantities that it could be dumped onto the desks of city council members in order to deliver an unambiguous message to them that the citizenry will no longer stand for their foolishness.

Ultimately, it was the people of California and Boulder, Colorado, that placed such inept and irresponsible individuals in positions of authority over them. Therefore, those same people must be the ones to rectify their mistakes. Accountability is key to fixing the problem. And holding their leaders to such accountability, or maybe “throwing the bums out”, will yield manifold benefits. For not only will those particular jurisdictions be restored to sanity, but throughout the nation, notice will have been served that the public is in no mood to tolerate any more sanctimonious bumbling from the liberal elite.

Growing up during the turbulent decades of the ‘60's and ‘70's, Christopher  Adamo saw, to his dismay, the nation's moral foundations being destroyed  before his very eyes. But even then he was a staunch Conservative at heart,  and rejected outright the tenets of America's counterculture revolution.

After a hitch in the Air Force, where he specialized in airborne  electro- optical systems, he pursued a career in the field of aerospace,  working for major defense contractors in California, Florida, and Colorado. But his career plans abruptly changed during the industry-wide downsizing that followed the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster.

Presently he is working in the field of industrial instrumentation in the state of Wyoming. Concurrently, he has become involved in that state's political process, attending state GOP conventions as a delegate, and serving as a member of the Wyoming Republican Central Committee. He has also aided in the candidacies of local legislators and state senators, as well as a U.S. Senator and Congresswoman.

From 1993 to 1996, he edited and wrote for “The Wyoming Christian”, the state newsletter for Christian Coalition of Wyoming. During that period, he developed an acute awareness of the harm being done to Conservatism by liberal activists within the Republican Party as well as the Democrats. This remains a favorite theme of his articles, which now appear as a regular feature on GOPUSA.
