"The preservation of the sacred fire of liberty and the destiny of the republican model of government are justly considered... deeply, ...finally, staked on the experiment entrusted to the hands of the American people." - George Washington, First Inaugural Address

American Liberals: Al Qaeda's “Useful Idiots”

By Christopher G. Adamo

As this year's presidential election approaches, government officials are becoming skittish about the possibility of another terrorist attack. That possibility, and its effect on the American people as a whole, should be considered in light of what the terrorists might hope to gain by slaughtering large numbers of innocent Americans on the eve of a national election.

If al Qaeda waits to attack until after the elections, their underlying message is that they recognize the ability of Americans to rise to the occasion, rally behind their leaders, and forcibly confront their enemies. In short, despite their hatred of the West, they nonetheless hold a respect for it.

A decision to inflict catastrophic harm prior to the election would conversely indicate that they believe Americans to be cowards who, like the Spanish, can be manipulated into voting for leaders that will acquiesce and capitulate to terrorist demands, out of fear. Present increases in the amount of “chatter” among terrorist cells, being noted by this country's intelligence apparatus, suggest that the terrorists are banking on the latter.

So what, in the aftermath of 9/11, would give al Qaeda and its numerous allies the notion that Americans might be willing to flee from future confrontations in the terror war? One has only to recall the speeches and other events associated with last week's Democratic Convention to ascertain the answer to that question.

Among the most popular and notable individuals in attendance at the Democrat Convention was “Fahrenheit 9/11” producer Michael Moore. Nazi Germany had Joseph Goebbels, and Imperial Japan had Tokyo Rose. But Michael Moore endows the American left with the talents of both.

Moore has proven himself capable of incorporating the most absurd of conspiracy theories with slick packaging, and selling them to a disturbingly large segment of the American population. Of course the only likely result of Moore 's work is that too many Americans will be diligently focused on Dick Cheney and Halliburton the next time terrorists steal a jumbo jet from behind their backs and fly it into a skyscraper.

Apparently, any fears that Americans might have regarding such a possibility, should be calmed by the empty promises of John Kerry, made as he was accepting his party's nomination for the presidency. Kerry insisted that he would properly “respond” to the next attack. But, other than political posturing, what was his real response to the last one? Did he recognize the nature of the threat facing the nation and unwaveringly support efforts to see the job through to the bitter end?

Perhaps the last attack was not big enough in his mind to warrant such a reaction. What can we expect from Kerry, more resolutions of condemnation from the United Nations? The more pertinent question might be whether or not we should hold out hope of expecting anything else.

Kerry, in dealing with this subject in an interview on ABC News, touted his abilities in the area of “treaties and relationships” with other nations around the world. Such rhetoric signifies a complete lack of comprehension of the force and resolve that is needed to effectively confront an enemy that believes its cause to be inspired from heaven.

In the end, attempts by Kerry and Edwards to convince Americans of their being tough on terror sounded much like the hollow claims made by Michael Dukakis during the 1988 Presidential Debates, that he was ostensibly “tough on crime.” And if such assertions by the Democrat nominees carry no weight of truth with them among the American people, what interpretation of their toothless and insincere comments can be expected among America 's fanatical enemies?

Recently the government of France arrived at the grim realization that the gathering storm clouds of Islamism threaten its very existence. Unfortunately, decades of societal collapse have left that nation with no foundation to stand upon other than the absurdities of “political correctness.” But whimpering accusations from feminists who “take offense” to the precepts of Islam will quickly wither when pitted against its fearsome might.

Europe was once fortified against such religious incursion by its own spiritual foundations, but those bastions no longer exist. Certainly France , like Spain , no longer has what it takes to sustain an all-out war against cultural aggression of this magnitude.

America does not suffer the degree of moral bankruptcy that has devastated Europe . Nevertheless, the culture war has taken its toll. If America 's leftists prevail, this nation will likewise lose its last line of defense.

Growing up during the turbulent decades of the ‘60's and ‘70's, Christopher  Adamo saw, to his dismay, the nation's moral foundations being destroyed  before his very eyes. But even then he was a staunch Conservative at heart,  and rejected outright the tenets of America's counterculture revolution.

After a hitch in the Air Force, where he specialized in airborne  electro- optical systems, he pursued a career in the field of aerospace,  working for major defense contractors in California, Florida, and Colorado. But his career plans abruptly changed during the industry-wide downsizing that followed the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster.

Presently he is working in the field of industrial instrumentation in the state of Wyoming. Concurrently, he has become involved in that state's political process, attending state GOP conventions as a delegate, and serving as a member of the Wyoming Republican Central Committee. He has also aided in the candidacies of local legislators and state senators, as well as a U.S. Senator and Congresswoman.

From 1993 to 1996, he edited and wrote for “The Wyoming Christian”, the state newsletter for Christian Coalition of Wyoming. During that period, he developed an acute awareness of the harm being done to Conservatism by liberal activists within the Republican Party as well as the Democrats. This remains a favorite theme of his articles, which now appear as a regular feature on GOPUSA.
